Who it is for
People whose cornea is uneven or irregular, so glasses and soft lenses do not give clear sight, and some people with very dry eyes, where the fluid cushion soothes the eye. Dr. Kumar will tell you if you are suited.
What the fitting involves
Dr. Kumar examines and measures your eye. A trial lens is placed and checked. The lens may be adjusted until it sits well. You then learn to put in, take out and clean the lens. A scleral lens is filled with sterile saline each time before it goes in.
What to expect
It can feel odd at first, then most people find it comfortable. Fitting may take more than one visit. Vision can be clearer and eyes more comfortable, but results vary.
Honest risks
- Common: fogging of the lens by the end of the day, a lens that is hard to insert at first, and a mild redness mark.
- Less common: dryness, deposits on the lens, or a poor fit that needs changes.
- Serious but rare: infection of the cornea or swelling from lack of oxygen. Careful cleaning and follow-up lower the risk.
- Call us at once if: your eye is red and painful, sight drops, light hurts, or there is discharge. Take the lens out and do not put it back.
